Book Review: Color Harmony by Hideaki Chijiiwa

I’ve had the book Color Harmony sitting on my bookshelf for about a year now, and I go to it every time that I need a color combination for a web page. It was written for printers, but it’s great for web designers. In it you will find hundreds of 2, 3, and 4 color combinations broken down into categories such as Surprising, Feminine, Young, Tranquil, Warm, and Cold.

What I usually do is have an idea of what the primary color will be before and then skim through the book looking for any combinations that have that color. And I usually go with the 4 color sets just in case I need that many colors, although they tend to work well even if one of the 4 is left out.

Below is a 3 color set from the book so you can see what they look like. The 3 colors across the top are DIC codes. Hex or RGB would have been more useful, but both Photoshop and Corel Draw have color sets made up of the DIC colors.

And, it’s a pretty cheap book. I found it for $17 at Books-A-Million. Amazon has it for about $14.
