Bookmarking threads on an SMF board

This is one of those features I’ve been wanting to add to my photography forum for a while now, but I just got around to it this weekend.

With the addition of a database table, a new template file, a few source files, and changes to several others, my Simple Machines Forum now gives my users the ability to bookmark their favorite threads. With the new theme files they’ll have a menu option across the top where they can view their bookmarked threads and the topics will have a little blue flag next to them so they can easily identify their bookmarks.

Screenshots after the break

The menu bar

Bookmark List

Admittedly not all that impressive with just one bookmarked, but the idea is there.

The bottom menu

Just a quick view of the menu along the bottom where users can bookmark threads.

The bookmark icon

The blue flag next to the the topic title.

I’ve got this up and running on one of my forums, although I’d imagine some little bugs will pop up as the users start bookmarking threads. Of course it only works for registered users since there’s no way to track the bookmarks of users that don’t have an ID. Well, I guess I could store a cookie, but then bookmarking threads wouldn’t be a good feature to entice visitors with.

Any chance of a mod?
I’m a little apprehensive to spend the time to package this up as a mod with version 2 of SMF in beta. I’d hate to spend a lot of time getting a mod together for 1.1.whatever only to have to redo it when 2.0 comes out.

Although, maybe I’ll have some time to kill over the next few weeks and put it together. If you’re interested, let me know.

  1. Oops. I got the bookmarking feature working and in the process uploaded older versions of files that undid several features - most notably a custom BBCode mod - that I now get to go back and fix. Oh well. If I didn’t have some kind of project to work on I don’t know what I would do with my time.

  2. Ok, it’s back up and working. Let me know what you think…
