I guess first question is why version 2.5.1. That's pretty far out of date.

Can you click on the forgot password link and have it email you a new one? The other option is to go into phpMyAdmin and manually reset your password.

I just installed WP v 2.5.1.
I got as far as the login, but can't go any further.
The auto generated password doesn't work, doesn't let me in.
Any advice.

Thanks.

I see the convenience in downloading the software just after buying it, but what if something happens, like what if the computer's hard drive breaks down. I'd then have to re-buy it. Any legal way of backing it up so I don't have to re-buy it?

Some hosts make it tough to figure out what's going on.

Earlier today a client sent me an email that they were getting a file not found error on their site even though they've uploaded the files to the right place. I've seen GoDaddy show this error before when you try to run a PHP script on a Windows server so that was my first thought, but she has WordPress installed on the same account so it's got to be one of the Linux packages.

Next step was to look at the server headers. It was returning a 403 Forbidden error even though the page said that the file wasn't found. Now, I understand not wanting to output MySQL errors and that sort of thing, but at least give the right type of error.

We'll see how it turns out...

Sure, smart quotes look better. But why not give us an option to disable them? I post a lot of code snippets to this blog and swapping out normal quotes to smart quotes makes it tough for people to copy and paste.

Apparently I'm not alone in having this issue. I went out Googling to see why it happened and what I could do to fix it and found a plugin called WPUntextureize that takes care of disabling smart quotes for me.

I just uploaded a holiday themed logo to a forum of mine and was wondering how many of y'all do the same.

In my case it's a photography forum and the normal logo has an O replaced with an aperture design. For the holidays I replaced it with a Christmas ornament. I went for subtle because I don't like it when a forum totally replaces their theme for a holiday.

Anybody tried this? Do your visitors like it? Do they even notice?

<?php
$arrRandom = range(1,7);
shuffle($arrRandom);
?>

First link creates an array with numbers 1 through 7. Second line shuffles the array. Piece of cake, huh?

if (!function_exists('bb_head')) { // show the middle column }

The bb_head function is only defined if the forum stuff is loaded, so if the template is loaded outside of the forum the middle column is displayed. If we're inside the forum, and bb_head is defined, the third column is displayed which makes the left column narrower.

I found a solution to my problem. I'll post how I fixed it here just in case anyone else will need to know. What I did was create a second header file called customheader.php. Then I created a second css file called custom.css. I changed it so that the customheader.php file called custom.css. I then created a custom.php template based off of page.php, got rid of the sidebar and called my customheader.php file like this: <?php include ('customheader.php'); ?>

Worked like a charm!

I'm just curious how you were able to make room in your template for your bbpress forum. I see that in your blog you made room for a third column to fit an ad and then when you click on Forum that column goes away. I'm having trouble trying to get rid of the sidebar padding on my site so that I can add a forum to the body. My site is santafepoa.org. I figured that I could make a custom template based off of page.php and then edit the css. In the custom template I have gotten rid of the sidebar but I can't do the same with the padding so that the forum will stretch the whole width. Check out my gallery to see what happens. I'd appreciate it if you could help me out.

osCommerce is a popular open-source shopping cart program with one fatal flaw. It's extremely difficult to get indexed well by the search engines. I've written a blog post about one way to help but it turns out there's a lot more things that can be done.

First, a little background. Search engines tend to devalue pages that are identical to other pages, and OSC creates many copies of the same page with different URIs which the SEs see as separate pages. So what do we do? We have to tell the SEs which pages we don't want indexed.

We do this by using the meta robots tag on pages when certain conditions are met. The code from the blog post only looked for the cPath variable in the query string and was this.

if ($_SERVER[‘PHP_SELF’]==‘/product_info.php’ && $_GET[‘cPath’]!=”))
{
echo ‘<meta content="noindex,follow" names="robots" />’.“\n“;
}

I missed that there is also a manufacturer_id variable that we need to check for. There's also an issue of duplicate title tags, although if you search on the OSC modification site you'll find solutions to that problem.

So any suggestions? I've seen OSC sites that are well indexed, so there's got to be a way to do it.

Not really a big deal since the sitemap is coming from a script, but if I was really worried about it it's good stuff to know.

I've been using Etomite 0.6 on a couple of my sites for a while. It wouldn't be my first choice for a new site today, but it does what it does pretty well. A couple months ago the 1.0 release finally came out. Looks like there were a few issues and they quickly released version 1.1.

You know, I really like the fact that people come and visit this little corner of the web because they found us on a search engine. But does Yahoo Slurp seem a little overzealous to you?

Let's take this month for an example. Slurp has gone through 36megs of bandwidth and only sent me 12 visitors. Admittedly 36 megs isn't much, but Google has sent me over 600 visitors and only crawled through 13 megs with less than half the total hits. Heck, even Microsoft Live has sent almost 150 visitors.

I guess the question is why does Slurp need so much more bandwidth and total connections than other search engines.

Well, turns out the error was on my side of the monitor. The onclick event I was having problems with was using window.location to redirect to a script but I had stupidly put it in a <input type="image"> element. What was happening is the form was submitting because I didn't do a return false; after the window.location call. Added it, and it's fixed.

I've found a potential JS bug in a web application of mine. It's been a nagging bug for a long time and one that I've never been able to replicate, but a user reported this afternoon that they're using Safari and it's not working. When they tried IE it worked fine.

FireFox makes it very easy to debug JavaScript. Is there anything like this for Safari?

Any great tips out there for staying motivated? I've got about a dozen different projects; some web, some not; that are in varying states of completion. But I often find it difficult to get up enough motivation to work on them. Fortunately this site is one of those projects and I'm sitting here working on it while watching House on my DVR. But that doesn't work for everything.

Two things I have found that work are music and keeping an organized area. Music seems to keep my mind from focusing too much on what I'm doing which helps keep out the boredom of looking at code. Keeping an organized work area is something that I wish I had learned a long time ago. My guess is that a clean desk and clean mind are somehow related and it's much easier for me to work with a clean desk.

I've read a lot of discussions that suggest seeding a forum with posts from fake members. Personally I find this dishonest and I don't plan on doing it here. Yes, this forum only has two posters as I'm typing this but I think the potential is there to lose a lot of trust from members and my gut says that that potential is worse than any advantage to gaining members.

What do you think? Is it worth the potential loss of trust if you get caught?

Does it depend on the forum and what you're discussing?

For the past couple of months I was planning on adding this forum when the daily visitors got above 200 for at least a few days in a row. However, I'm not all that patient of a person and was hovering around 175 visitors a day when I finally decided to go ahead and add this board to FBW.

What happened though is since adding this forum my daily visitors have gone up from about 175 a day to about 225 a day. Sure, those stats are nothing compared to big sites but bumping my average daily visitors up about 25% seems like a good thing.

I've noticed a lot of emails coming my way telling me that my AdWords account needed to be verified. Problem is they aren't coming to the address that's associated with my AdWords account.

So, here's a little warning for all of y'all out there. There's a scam going around using AdWords as the cover just like there are scams for PayPal, eBay, and all sorts of banks.
