Hello,

I just installed WP v 2.5.1.
I got as far as the login, but can't go any further.
The auto generated password doesn't work, doesn't let me in.
Any advice.

Thanks.

Hi,

I see the convenience in downloading the software just after buying it, but what if something happens, like what if the computer's hard drive breaks down. I'd then have to re-buy it. Any legal way of backing it up so I don't have to re-buy it?

This forum is wrapped inside the WordPress theme to keep the style consistent across the site. To do that I included the WordPress blog-header.php file because I needed to be able to use the sidebar widgets even though the forum software is technically running separately.

I noticed a major problem though. Even though the forum pages are displaying correctly, the server is returning a 404 header so search engines think the page isn't there. I know the reason is because I'm including that blog-header.php file and WordPress thinks the forum page doesn't exist. But I'm looking for a solution to what seems to be a fairly significant problem.

And I did find a WordPress plugin that overrides the 404 header by sending a 200 header later, but that seems like it would cause even the correctly sent 404s to be overridden as well and that doesn't do any good.

Some hosts make it tough to figure out what's going on.

Earlier today a client sent me an email that they were getting a file not found error on their site even though they've uploaded the files to the right place. I've seen GoDaddy show this error before when you try to run a PHP script on a Windows server so that was my first thought, but she has WordPress installed on the same account so it's got to be one of the Linux packages.

Next step was to look at the server headers. It was returning a 403 Forbidden error even though the page said that the file wasn't found. Now, I understand not wanting to output MySQL errors and that sort of thing, but at least give the right type of error.

We'll see how it turns out...

ryan on "WordPress & smart quotes"

Sure, smart quotes look better. But why not give us an option to disable them? I post a lot of code snippets to this blog and swapping out normal quotes to smart quotes makes it tough for people to copy and paste.

Apparently I'm not alone in having this issue. I went out Googling to see why it happened and what I could do to fix it and found a plugin called WPUntextureize that takes care of disabling smart quotes for me.

I just uploaded a holiday themed logo to a forum of mine and was wondering how many of y'all do the same.

In my case it's a photography forum and the normal logo has an O replaced with an aperture design. For the holidays I replaced it with a Christmas ornament. I went for subtle because I don't like it when a forum totally replaces their theme for a holiday.

Anybody tried this? Do your visitors like it? Do they even notice?

ryan on "How-To - Random list of numbers in PHP"

Need to create a list of numbers in random order? Here's a quick and easy way.

<?php
$arrRandom = range(1,7);
shuffle($arrRandom);
?>

First link creates an array with numbers 1 through 7. Second line shuffles the array. Piece of cake, huh?

At the end of the year we always forget to update the copyright notice on our websites. Now, it's arguable how important the date is but here's a quick little snippet of PHP code that will always keep you up-to-date. Just replace "2000" with whatever the first year you need is.

<p>Content &copy;2000-<?php echo date('Y'); ?></p>
